Papers of Charles Wood Irish 1852-1927.

The papers of C.W. Irish consist of subject files documenting his career. Included are diaries dating from 1854 to 1904, surveyor notebooks concerning projects in Iowa and Nevada, letterpress books from 1893-1896, photographs, postcards, terrain profiles, and material on irrigation, mining, and an 1875 meteor detonation. There are correspondence folders which include letters from Joaquin Miller and John P. Irish.

John Powell Irish, editor, attorney, farmer, law-maker, humanitarian, and official, was born in Iowa City, Iowa, 1 January 1843. Irish was a school teacher and was admitted to the bar before he entered the field of journalism. He served in the Iowa state legislature (1869-1872) and in 1880 moved to California, where he was editor of the Times (Oakland) and the Alta California.
